The hardest part of growing a creative business

The hardest part of growing my business hasn’t been sales.

It hasn’t been client work.
It hasn’t even been the hours.

It’s been the mental game.

It takes a ton of courage.

Because here’s the truth:

  • Finances still scare me sometimes.

  • Hiring is never easy.

  • Building culture takes daily effort.

  • Delegation? Still tough.

Running a creative business is exciting, but it’s not for the faint of heart.

This year has tested me more than any other.

Back in the spring, I had many moments getting out of the shower in the morning when I thought, “Am I doing this right? Did I make a bad decision? Am I fit for this?”

I think every time we push past a plateau we also push outside of our comfort zone, and that’s seriously uncomfortable.

It’s also in those moments that we have to rely on our strengths.

What has brought me this far?

Oh yeah, it’s how we deliver for clients. It’s how we anticipate what a client needs. It’s how we make this process a breeze for clients.

Remember and build on your strengths so that you don’t spiral.

What’s helped me manage the pressure:
✅ Reminding myself that I made it this far
✅ Documenting small wins to boost morale (for me and my team)
✅ Training & trusting my people instead of trying to do everything myself

It’s easy to dwell on any negatives.

But documenting those small wins (and big wins) and sharing them with the team makes a big difference.

It’s that reminder that we are building something successful and we are doing it together. It’s working!

And then trusting my team members to get it done. That hasn’t been easy. It’s been hard for me to trust people to do the work just as good as me.

But I have to train and let go.

I have to show them that they can do it without me always being around. That’s the only way we can grow beyond my efforts.

We’ve all felt overwhelmed. It’s part of the journey.

None of these things are perfect.
But they’re the difference between surviving the stress and building something that can last.

And if you’re in that stage right now—feeling stuck in the overwhelm—I get it.
I’ve been there.

That’s why I offer 1:1 coaching for creatives.
